Dawn Van Berkel, Counseling Intern
For nearly 20 years, my passion has been making a positive impact on others. Through my previous work in corporate and non-profit organizations, I have always centered my career around helping people. My training at George Mason University has shaped me into an effective counselor, using a client-centered and strengths-based model, as well as CBT and psychodynamic approaches.
As a therapist, I am dedicated to providing an atmosphere of warmth, genuineness, acceptance, and respect for each unique individual in order to encourage personal growth. I am committed to giving people the space to work through various issues. I draw my practice eclectically based on each individual’s needs.
I enjoy working with children, adolescents, adults, the LGBTQIA+ community, and treat a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, family conflict, relationship issues, trauma, and life transitions. I teach workshops to help adults identify and practice effective parenting skills. With my own personal experiences in mind, I also provide support and coaching for parents of children with Autism.
I enjoy working collaboratively with clients who are motivated and have the desire to explore ways to find greater life satisfaction and happiness. In my sessions, I bring compassion, openness, and authenticity. I believe in the power of developing a trusting relationship and creating a warm, non-judgmental environment to facilitate growth and increase self-awareness. My office is an inclusive and welcoming space for all people. I practice under the supervision of Melanie Davis, LPC.
For the last four years, one of the highlights of my week has been volunteering at a preschool for at-risk families, where I intuitively gravitate to the children that need a little extra help to succeed. I am also the owner of a Labrador retriever named Olive, that is a therapy dog in training.
